Body Mass Index (BMI) or Quetelet index plays an important role in figure out your weight, health and lifestyle choices. How is BMI used?

In BMI formulas simply put your weight and height and calculate your BMI value. There are three sets of values used to determine body mass.

The standard weight status categories associated with BMI ranges for adults are shown in the following table

BMI (Body Mass Index) Weight Status
Below 18.5 Underweight
18.5 – 24.9 Normal or Healthy Weight
25.0 – 29.9 Overweight
30.0 and Above Obese

BMI Formulas:

There are two type of formula used to calculate BMI value.

Metric BMI Formula

BMI = (Weight in Kilograms / (Height in Meters x Height in Meters))

Imperial BMI Formula

BMI = (Weight in Pounds / (Height in inches x Height in inches)) x 703

How do I know if I’m underweight?

If your BMI weight status is below then 18.5 than you’re in the category of underweight people.
